I think the book is a calmer version of what actually happened. When Depp visited Thompson, the writer was very underwhelmed with the haircut Depp had been given in preparation for the movie.
In fact, when they met at the Aspen airport, Thompson was a bit thrown off when he first saw it and asked Depp to not remove his hat quite yet.
Once he finally inspected Depp's haircut, the author insisted that the Hollywood shave had not gone far enough, but was adamant that he could fix it.
Although most people would be nervous to have someone as unhinged as Thompson poking around their scalp with a razor blade, Depp had no qualms.
No cuts. No weirdness. He wore a mining light, so he could see. During his friendship with Thompson, Depp saw his fair share of fiery explosions.
This comes as no surprise, considering one of Thompson's favorite pastimes was blowing things up. In fact, when the two met in that Aspen Tavern back in , they ended the night by shooting a makeshift bomb in Thompson's backyard.
Years later, while preparing for the release of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , Depp reminisced on the experience with Rolling Stone writer Chris Heath: "He hands me a propane tank — I've got a cigarette hanging out of my mouth — and he hands me this thing about the size of a matchbox and says, 'Tape these on the propane canister.
Depp hit it on his very first try, resulting in what Depp recounted as "a seventy-five-foot explosion, an enormous, huge burst of fire.
While staying with Thompson, Depp almost sent the whole house up in flames himself. When putting his cigarette onto an ashtray on top of what he thought was a beside table, Depp realized it was actually a crate of live dynamite.
One of the perks Depp experienced while living with Hunter S. Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood.
He was born John Christopher Depp II in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, , to Betty Sue Wells , who worked as a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer.
Depp was raised in Florida. He dropped out of school when he was 15, and fronted a series Born: June 9 , in Owensboro, Kentucky, USA.

Duke drops Gonzo off at the airport, driving right up to the airplane, before returning to the hotel one last time to finish his article.
He then speeds back to Los Angeles. Bakshi is quoted as saying:. Hunter had given the rights to a girlfriend of his. I spent three days with her trying to talk her into me animating it — she wanted to make a live-action of it — I kept telling her that a live-action would look like a bad cartoon but an animated version would be a great one.
She had a tremendous disdain for animators because it wasn't considered the top of Hollywood. Hunter also could not make her change her mind.
So she made the pic with Johnny Depp who is a great actor , and got the film I told her she would get — it would have been more real in a cartoon using Steadman's drawings.
In January , Texas Monthly announced that Larry McMurtry had signed a contract to write a screenplay for a film adaptation.
Rhino Films began work on a film version as early as Under pressure, Rhino countered by green-lighting the film and hiring Alex Cox to direct within a few days.
Rhino hired Terry Gilliam and was granted an extension from Thompson but only with the stipulation that the director made the film. Rhino did not want to commit to Gilliam in case he didn't work out.
I got kind of agitated about it because I thought they were trying to put off doing it. So I began to charge them more I wanted to see the movie done, once it got started.
The two actors were upset when producer Laila Nabulsi told them of Rhino's plans. In retaliation, Depp and Gilliam locked Rhino out of the set during filming.
During the initial development to get the film made, Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando were originally considered for the roles of Duke and Gonzo but they both grew too old.
John Malkovich was later considered for the role of Duke, but he grew too old as well. At one point John Cusack was almost cast Cusack had previously directed the play version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , with his brother playing Duke.
Thompson met with Johnny Depp he became convinced that no one else could play him. When Cox and Davies started writing the screenplay, Depp and del Toro committed to starring in the film.
Gilliam said in an interview that his films are actor-led, the performance of the two characters in Fear and Loathing is hyper realistic but truthful: "I am interested in real people in bizarre, twisted environments that force them to act Gonzo is based on Thompson's friend Oscar Zeta Acosta , who disappeared sometime in He was the "Chicano lawyer" notorious for his party binges.
The lead actors undertook extraordinary preparations for their respective roles. Not only is [the book] true, but there's more. And it was worse.
Cox started writing the screenplay with Tod Davies , a UCLA Thompson scholar. During pre-production, Cox and producer Laila Nabulsi had "creative differences" and she forced Rhino to choose between her and Cox.
We sort of cannibalized the book. Grisoni remembers, "I'd sit at the keyboard, and we'd talk and talk and I'd keep typing. Gonzo and the waitress of the North Star Coffee Lounge.
The director said, "This is two guys who have gone beyond the pale, this is unforgivable — that scene, it's ugly. My approach, rather than to throw it out, was to make that scene the low point.
Initially, the studio wanted Gilliam to update the book for the s, which he considered, "And then I looked at the film and said, 'No, that's apologizing.
I don't want to apologize for this thing. It is what it is. If it's an accurate representation of that book, which I thought was an accurate representation of a particular time and place and people.
Keeping it set in the 70's, using the backdrop of the Vietnam War and a perceived loss of the American dream , offers reasoning to the characters actions.
When the film approached release, Gilliam learned that the Writers Guild of America WGA would not allow Cox and Davies to be removed from the credits even though none of their material was used in the production of the film.
The director said, "But there have been at least five previous attempts at adapting the book, and they all come from the book.
They all use the same scenes. As a director, I was automatically deemed a 'production executive' by the guild and, by definition, discriminated against.
But for Tony to go without any credit would be really unfair. Check out what we'll be watching in Browse our picks. Title: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas The big-screen version of Hunter S.
Thompson's seminal psychedelic classic about his road trip across Western America as he and his large Samoan lawyer searched desperately for the "American dream" Written by Laurence Mixson.
It's hard to describe how good this movie is without sounding sycophantic but it really is that good. This film is based on the "true" story of when the notorious reporter Hunter S.
Thompson and his then attorney Oscar Zeta Acosta went to Las Vegas to cover a bike race for rolling stone magazine but instead spent the entire trip going out of their minds on various illegal and legal chemicals.
This may sound like a one trick pony for stoners and 60's throwbacks but I am neither and I thoroughly enjoyed this film.
The story sticks closely enough to the book without alienating the books fan base but also trims out the right areas so that the film doesn't become overly long and uninteresting.
The film is still fairly long, compared with most popcorn fare, at around 2hrs and does sag a little in places but the pace quickly picks up again.
The performances are absolutely spot on with Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro virtually becoming their characters.
Both are heavily disguised under make-up but their acting ability shines through. On first viewing I wasn't that impressed, it was a good film but not a great film, but after a second viewing I fell in love with it.
You notice things and pick up on gags the second time around that you missed the first time. You immerse yourself in their world so much that you feel like you were there with them on the "trip" in both senses of the word.
I have shown this film to most of my friends and they also have become hooked after viewing the film twice, it's such a shame that this great film works like this as I'm sure there are many people who are unwilling to give it the second chance it deserves.
If you haven't seen this film I suggest you do and if you don't like it see it again. If you have seen this film and didn't like it, see it again.

F or the first scene of Fear and Loathing to be filmed, outside a Las Vegas hotel front, Raoul Duke — Depp — is shown enthusiastically snorting ether.
This is a book, of course, whose central characters start out with a stash of grass, mescaline, acid, cocaine, tequila, Budweiser, ether, amyls and assorted other uppers and downers, then start searching for kinds of chemical strangeness that will really get them going.
ME: [A careful question] People will be eternally curious as to how necessary or appropriate it was to duplicate various parts of the documented, famous consumption, both simply as being Hunter and as living up to aspects of the book.
DEPP: [A careful answer] I can say honestly that I was very responsible as a human being in my approach to the preparation and the work on the character Raoul Duke.
Very responsible. ME: [A clarification requested] So you managed to bridge your responsibility to everyday life and to the character?
